Help With Overcoming the effects of School Phobia and School anxiety in Children

When your child does not want to go to school (school phobia) it can be a huge worry for you as a parent or carer.

As well as being a stressful time for your child, it is very upsetting for you as a parent too. Your natural instinct is to try to make sure your child is content and carefree.

When you see your child upset and anxious about school you do everything you can to find out what it is that is causing their anxiety. This can be very difficult because the cause is not always obvious.

Some common reasons for a child becoming a school refuser (school phobic) are:

  • Your child maybe afraid to leave home because they are worried about your well being whilst they are away from you.
  • Something in school may have intimidated your child. School refusal (school avoidance) may be a result of your child’s fear that the experience may happen again.

  • Your child may refuse to attend school because they suffer from separation anxiety. This occurs mostly in younger children who are not used to being away from home.

  • Your child may be afraid of a particular activity, such as going on the school bus or attending assembly or they may have a fear of being made fun of or of being criticised.

  • The cause may just as easily be some underlying sub conscious cause that your child cannot explain.
